Ansh Gala | Week 1: Just Can't Let It Go!

Across America there is so much dispute over who controls the people. Is it the government? Is it Big Pharma? Is it corporate America? I don’t know about all of them. What I do know is that something has control over me. That thing is my wonderful phone.

I think I might be borderline worshipping my phone. Of all the people, places, and prized possessions in my life, I probably spend the most time with my phone. In my mind I look for entertainment, and the first image I see is a nice 6 inch screen blasting that amazing blue light right into my pupils.

There was a time my parents used to yell at me for watching too much television. They would close it, hide the remote, or even unplug it totally. Now with my cellphone, and my “need to contact people in case of an emergency” there’s no taking it away. It isn’t just a device. My phone is a part or extension of me. There is a version of me that lives on each social media app known to man. Honestly, some might even have multiple accounts. I use it for everything. Sometimes, I am surprised I actually talk to people physically in person. I could just text them.

But I knew that my phone was consuming me. It was like I was watching myself get more and more addicted to this device every day. I think I came to terms with it, as if it was inevitable, and I was just going to give up.

Maybe, I am still very addicted. I would like to think that because I have so much more work, I am forced to be less addicted. Hopefully, my phone won’t totally consume me.

  1. Hi Ansh! I found your blog very relatable. As someone who also struggles with getting distracted by my phone I can empathize with feeling resigned at the fact that I am addicted to my phone because it feels inevitable. It is definitely scary to realize our growing dependence on phones and how we are getting more and more consumed by the online world. I can relate to how you felt that your phone controlled you, because my phone sometimes also controls me by distracting me from necessary work and limiting my productivity. However, I hope that over time, our phones become less distracting and prevalent throughout our lives!

  2. Hi Ansh! I’m so happy that I get to have you in my blog cohort this semester! I really loved the authentic narrative you weaved throughout this blog regarding a simple addiction to a device that controls us all. Throughout your examples and experiences I really put myself in your shoes, because the overall topic of the social media craze and phone frenzy is something that resonated with most Gen Zers. I realized that our dependence on a device, whether that be social media, chat-gpt, or video games, has really stripped us of our sense of reality and individuality.

“Hopefully my phone won’t consume me” is something that truly highlights the ephemeral nature of consumerist culture and the idea that we tend to fancy ourselves within a disillusioned reality when truly the only alluring “blue” essence that we need to look towards is the sky.

  3. Hi Ansh! Super excited for you to be in my blog cohort! I remember us always talking to each other, what we wrote our blogs on, but this year, we don't need to this time :). I loved how you were able to talk about something that we all can relate to, phone usage. No doubt, I use my phone super often, which is a bad habit I need to get ride. Similar to you except spending time with family and studying, I spend the most time on my phone. I loved when you used the phrase "worshipping my phone". That is something I see so often now, including me. People were depressed when TikTok got banned for 12 hours, and I found it hilarious on how people cared so much about one single app. Though I was sad too, I got over my sadness in the first hour. I can totally relate to the idea of taking my phone away will be dangerous because of emergency contact. I always offer to give my phone, but they always say keep it, incase of emergency. It's kind of similar to the "get out of jail free card". Overall, I loved reading your blog and can't wait for next week!
