Harini Kannan Week 14 - If I Lost My Memory...
If I Lost My Memory…
I’ve always thought about what I would do if I lost my memory. It’s one of those rhetorical questions I ponder at random times, like in the shower or when I’m dissociating in math class. I think the first thing I would do after losing my memory (after figuring out my name and where I live) would be rewatching my favorite TV shows and rereading my favorite books.
I can imagine experiencing the show Game of Thrones again for the first time—no spoilers or expectations, just pure shock and betrayal every episode. I would be stunned about Ned Stark’s fate, side-eyeing Littlefinger from the start (or maybe not, since I technically wouldn’t remember how sketchy he is), and probably rooting for my favorite characters to make it out alive (spoiler alert: they don’t).
Then, there’s the books. I would love to reread the Harry Potter and Percy Jackson series. If I forgot everything, I could relive Harry getting his Hogwarts letter or Percy discovering Camp Half-Blood. I’d be completely oblivious to Snape’s backstory and genuinely surprised that Like was the hero of the Great Prophecy. I’d also get to laugh again at Percy’s sarcasm (I know all the jokes by heart at this point). And let’s not forget Diary of a Wimpy Kid. I’d get to experience Greg Heffley’s antics all over again and wonder why he continues to make horrible life choices (and why he’s been in middle school for 18 years). Honestly, that might be the best perk of memory loss.
Of course, there would be downsides. For example, how would I know that I despise non-fiction books? Would I pick one up, thinking it sounds interesting, only to be disappointed? Worse, would I have to rediscover my absolute hatred of tomatoes? No, thank you.
Losing my memory would definitely be a massive inconvenience, but there’s still something fun about the idea of experiencing everything again for the first time. As long as someone reminds me to avoid non-fiction books and tomatoes, I think I’m up for it.
P.S. If you haven’t read or watched Game of Thrones, you probably won’t get some of these references, so I apologize. However, I hope you’ve all read Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, and Diary of a Wimpy Kid because it would be a crime not to.
